Surya and Sandha

Posted on Aug 21st, 2008 by Nomali : IntegralSpiritualChocolate Nomali
Surya means sun, and Sandha means moon in my language (Sinhalese)

I was crossing the road this morning coming to Boulder Integral Center around 9am and I looked to my left and I saw the moon over the hills...big and clear...even at 9am, a sunny, noisy Boulder morning.  To my right, of course, the sun.

Back in the day, I used to wake up next to some long lost love in a room that had, quite literally, glass walls.  I would wake up early, earlier than he would, and listen to our breathing and watch the sun rising from the east, and the moon disappearing behind the mountains in the west.  When I saw the moon this morning, it stopped me in my tracks for just a moment.

Stunning

I felt, utterly, that need to fall to my knees, except, the furiously flashing orange Stop Walking sign had me scampering with no grace to the other side of the road.   Things come and go so soon

I never want to miss a chance to Bow

to the Surya
to the Sandha
and the precious Sangha of you and me, and the dying-birthing breaths in-between

So,

let me know when you Awake.

Now there's a tasty bit to come across on my lunch break!

…never want to miss a chance to Bow

Of course bowing comes in all shapes & sizes. When there's no time to put hands together and bend there's always the chance for a flash of intentionality, an interior bowing.

You've reminded me of when I walked a few miles of Manhattan en route to the first Buddhism and Psychotherapy Conference ('87). After a few blocks of street crossing, looking both ways, I began to flash on the Sufi prayer (said with right and left turns of the head), “A-Salam-Alekhem-Al-Akmhed-HU-Allah” (may the peace of the source of truth be with you). There's a string of stories around taking that opportunity to make the whole walk north a meditation on that intention.

perhaps another time.
